EDUCATIONAL SESSION (Early onset Scoliosis)
On behalf of the SOSORT 2011 Local Organizing and International Scientific Committees I have the pleasure of inviting you to participate in the 8th International Conference on Conservative Management of Spinal Deformities. Following the successful previous editions, held in Barcelona, Milan, Poznan, Boston, Athens, Lyon and Montreal, this time the SOSORT comes to its first place Barcelona, a dynamic and representative city of the Mediterranean way of living and at the same time a city with a special tradition in our field.
The main purpose of this Conference is to provide a forum to present and discuss about developments in the field of conservative management of spinal deformities, with attendees coming from all over the world. The Conference is a show window, where up-to-date clinical and research activities. Together with scientific sessions, educational and consensus sessions provide the most recent advances in the field, all oriented to the patients and their families.
SOSORT promotes a multidisciplinary approach and we are sure that the atmosphere of Barcelona will provide a stimulating environment for good work and companionship of scientists, physical medicine and rehabilitation doctors, spinal surgeons, physiotherapists, psychologists, CPOs and patients. By attending the conference, and hopefully adding some extra days with a great variety of possibilities for sightseeing and recreation in and outside Barcelona, you will be able to exchange scientific ideas, obtain information about new developments and innovations, and confirm international friendship in a charming and pleasant atmosphere.
It give us great pleasure to extend a warm welcome to all those attending this International Conference in Barcelona. We trust your stay will be both enjoyable and productive.
We are looking forward to welcoming you in Barcelona!

"Brace Technology" Thematic Series
Bracing is the main non-surgical intervention in the treatment of idiopathic scoliosis during growth, in hyperkyphosis (and Scheuermann disease) and occasionally for spondylolisthesis; it can be used in adult scoliosis, in the elderly when pathological curves lead to a forward leaning posture or in adults after traumatic injuries.
The state of research in the field of conservative treatment is insufficient and while it can be stated that there is some evidence to support bracing, we must also acknowledge that today we do not have a common and generally accepted knowledge base, and that instead, individual expertise still prevails, giving rise to different schools of thought on brace construction and principles of correction.
The only way to improve the knowledge and understanding of brace type and brace function is to establish a single and comprehensive source of information about bracing.
Serving the above described aim the Scoliosis Journal launched the "Brace Technology" Thematic Series, where technical papers coming from the different schools will be published.

A new society has been born called 'International Society on Scoliosis Orthopaedic and Rehabilitation Treatment', SOSORT. We met for the first time in Barcelona on January 2004 during the first International Conference on Conservative Management of Spinal Deformities'. This first meeting was organized in a very short time. Our first idea was to organize an informal meeting with some old friends from the SIRER (Société Internationale de Recherche et d'Etude sur le Rachis) who also used to present papers on this topic in the IRSSD meetings. The aim of this meeting was to discuss our different approaches and to improve the standards of treatment. We were expecting a small meeting with only 20 or 30 colleagues, however we were pleasantly surprised when we reached a quota of almost100 members, coming from many different countries and also using different strategies.
